Marking the Swedish Cinnamon Bun Day (Kanelbullens dag), the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm hosted 'From Ceylon to Kanelbulle'; an afternoon event celebrating Ceylon Cinnamon and its connection with Sweden’s most beloved ‘kanellbulle’ or the cinnamon bun. The event was co-organized with the Arom & Kryddföreningen - the Swedish Spice and Flavour Association.

The event brought together industry representatives, culinary professionals, Swedish Foreign Ministry officials, and friends of Sri Lanka to explore the journey of Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) from Sri Lanka's plantations to Swedish kitchens, and to highlight the deep connection between a celebrated Swedish tradition and Sri Lankan heritage.

The guests were welcomed with a Ceylon cinnamon infused ice tea made with Ceylon Tea. Participants then experienced an information-rich programme seamlessly delivered through a mix of presentations, video screenings as well as live demonstrations that chronicled the journey of the spice from its initial peeling of the bark to its arrival in the Swedish kitchen.

Speaking to the participants, Secretary-General of Arom & Kryddföreningen Rasmus Bäckström highlighted the importance of the event for the Swedish spice and culinary industry. Food Scientist Dr. Samanthi Madawala presented 'Chemistry of Cinnamon' explaining the unique qualities and versatility of Ceylon Cinnamon and what sets it apart in flavour and composition.

A short film, Meet the Producers, shared stories from Sri Lanka's leading cinnamon industry producers, highlighting the farmers and artisans behind the spice. Another short film, Ceylon Cinnamon Inspiration, featured the renowned Swedish chef Per Morberg sourcing cinnamon and other spices from Sri Lanka followed by 'The Chef's Perspective: Cooking with Ceylon Cinnamon' sharing ideas for using the spice in both traditional and contemporary cooking by Sri Lankan chefs in Sweden.

During the networking session followed, the guests were treated to traditional Swedish Cinnamon Buns alongside authentic Sri Lankan cuisine crafted with true Ceylon Cinnamon and Ceylon Tea.

'From Ceylon to Kanelbulle' forms part of the Embassy's ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lankan products, strengthen economic and cultural relations with Sweden, and raise awareness of Ceylon Cinnamon as a premium, geographically distinct Sri Lankan spice.
