Martin Wickramasinghe's Madol Doova introduced to School Children in Sweden
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm welcomed a group of young Swedish school children for a special programme centred on Sri Lankan literature, featuring the Swedish translationof the Sri Lankan children's novel Madol Doova by Martin Wickramasinghe; the father of the modern Sinhala literature.
The children were introduced to the story, its characters and the Sri Lankan culture and traditions reflected in the novel followed by reading of a chapter from the book in Swedish language by Ms. Priyanwada M. Banduwardana who translated Madol Doowa into Swedish. Following this, the students participated in an interactive session with the translator, where they discussed about the story, country and its culture.
The children also took part in a creative drawing activity inspired by the book reading,exploring the story through their imagination.
The programme concluded with traditional Sri Lankan refreshments and Ceylon tea, giving the children an opportunity to experience Sri Lankan hospitality and savour the flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine.
This programme underscores Embassy’s cultural diplomacy initiatives to promote Sri Lankan literature and art in Sweden as an integral part of fostering stronger people to people ties between the two nations.
